During the 1950s the sizeable flow of immigrants to Canada brought with it a complement of Quantity Surveyors from the U.K. who saw the need for an organization that represented best practices for their profession. In February 1959, a Founder Members meeting was held in Toronto and the Canadian Institute of Quantity Surveyors was formed.

Over the last 50 years, the CIQS has been able to increase recognition of the role of Quantity Surveyors in the design and construction process with both government and industry. Today, widening acceptance of techniques such as value management and statistical analysis has broadened the influence Quantity Surveyors and Estimators have on design and construction.
